I looked at several terms of services and most seem to be pretty clear that you can't use their tiling service directly without opening an account and keeping below limits that I envision we are likely to hit this month. I've already mostly ported the map away from gmaps and over to openlayers locally, but need to find a tiling provider that can ideally offer me free tiling for our basemap or at least an affordable amount. I'm envisioning that the site will die once things ease from lockdown and I'm fine with that, but in the mean time I want to continue running this with as little financial burden as possible, what is the best way for me to move away from google maps & provide this. The sites only been up a few weeks but I'm expecting traffic to potentially increase in the coming weeks, we're not technically a non profit or registered as anything special, we just built something to try and help support local businesses in our country. That said, it felt good to create something useful and potentially broaden someone's perspective.Hey! So I'm currently running a site that has no intention of monetising, its hitting between 1800 - 6000 visitors a day the majority of whom visit a map and currently we're using google maps js api for a dynamic map with markers, and as you can imagine, that is going to start costing us. Although, my biggest hope is that this project becomes irrelevant sooner rather than later. The clusterer plugin could use some workshopping to be more cross-compatible. Next on the list is finding a way to host the map tiles on the cloud so they can be delivered more quickly. csvtojson along with request were used to convert the New York Times data to JSON format. states found in this tutorial, with attribution to Mike Bostock. OH 44256, 5011 Grande Blvd Bldg A Leaflet MapTiler OpenStreetMap. Finally, I learned a lot about the challenges that come with creating a satisfying UI that feels intuitive and works in a satisfying way. I had limited experience with HTTP requests as well, so I was forced to develop a better understanding there. Essentially, this was my first time using pretty much all of these packages, frameworks and APIs (and also my first time using a bundler), so I had to absorb a lot fairly quickly in order to get the project done on time. I opted to use OpenStreetMap and Maptiler along with Leaflet.js instead, which were all unfamiliar to me at the start of the project. My only experience with online mapping was using the Google Maps API for a much smaller project some time ago. Managing the dependencies for this project was also difficult and I found myself with a broken project a handful of times when trying to introduce something new. Those challenges don't happen often in classes, so it was useful seeing the practical side of things while pulling this together. For me, one of the most difficult parts of the project was rummaging through the source code and documentation for the various APIs and plugins to understand how they worked and how to fix things when they went wrong. Luckily I was able to get the site up and running in time for the deadline. The teammates I was assigned unfortunately had to drop out of the competition due to external circumstances before any of the coding had begun, so I had to reassess my timeline for the project in order to get it done on my own. If a user clicks on a state, they can see recent Reddit posts from the subreddit r/Coronavirus related to that state. The states on the map are shaded by the number of known cases as they are provided by the New York TImes. The user can click on the markers to view the photos in a side-pane. This web application fetches pseudorandomly obtained geotagged photos from Flickr with the keyword "coronavirus" and adds them to a map. This program hopes to give the user a better picture of how the pandemic is affecting the country as a whole. With New York currently being the epicenter of the pandemic, other states have gone by the wayside in terms of national coverage. We wanted to create a way to see the different ways communities have been impacted on a state-by-state basis. The universal impact of social distancing has produced empty cities and streets to an extent never before experienced by Americans. A working demo of the project can be found here: /.

![]() He also received $823,207 in campaign funds from the oil and gas industry. ![]() Why? Manchin, personally, makes roughly half a million dollars a year in dividends from coal company stock. According to the latest Gallup Poll, 73% of citizens are in favor of clean energy. They represent Big Pharma, not their constituents. All are opposed, along with many Republicans, to having Medicare negotiate prices with Big Pharma. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) received $433,178 (Kaiser Health News). Scott Peters (D-CA) received $541,400 since 2013 and Rep. Robert Menendez (D-CA) received $491,800. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) received $258,236 from the pharmaceutical industry and Sen. How do these donations correlate with congressional votes?Īlthough 88% of citizens favor allowing the federal government to negotiate for lower prices on medications according to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, this benefit was eliminated from Biden’s budget proposal. Indirectly, it consists of regulatory frameworks and programs designed to benefit the wealthy (e.g., Trump’s tax cut).Īccording to, it costs over $9.8 million to get elected to the Senate and over $2.3 million to get elected to the House, money that comes mostly from wealthy individuals, corporations, and PACs. Many of their votes seem to “follow the money” which leads to a form of government called an oligarchy or plutocracy which exists when a government is controlled by the wealthy, either directly or indirectly. If you follow the votes of those who “represent” us you will see an interesting pattern. The problem is that, in our current government, we, the people, the common people, are not truly represented. On the surface, it appears that we may be a democratic republic. Since we elect those who represent us, we can be considered a “democratic republic.” So, when Tim Walberg stated that he did not believe in democracy but, “I believe in a republic,” it is noteworthy that he did not say “democratic republic.” Consequently, the leaders need not be elected, which we see in many autocratic “republics” such as the People’s Republic of China and Cuba. The key concept to the word republic is that the leader of the government (or state) is not a hereditary monarch but, rather, someone who is elected or installed. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the US political system, even when fairly large majorities of Americans favour policy change, they generally do not get it.Perhaps we are a republic, which is a form of government that relies on the representation of the people rather than people representing themselves as in a pure democracy. government policies rarely align with the preferences of the majority of Americans, but do favour special interests and lobbying organizations: "When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organized interests, they generally lose. The peer-reviewed study, which will be taught at these universities in September, says: "The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence." policies enacted in that period and comparing them to the expressed preferences of average Americans (50th percentile of income), affluent Americans (90th percentile), and large special interests groups, researchers concluded that the U.S. Kleptocracy: 'a society whose leaders make themselves rich and powerful by stealing from the rest of the people' (). political system.Īfter sifting through nearly 1,800 U.S. Oligarchy: 'a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes' (merriam- /dictionary ). ![]() ![]() The report, " Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens" (PDF), used extensive policy data collected between 19 to empirically determine the state of the U.S. Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. ![]() Then he exits the bus and crosses the street without looking both ways because he's already DEAD! Such “solid” output voltage levels will be true only for conditions of minimum loading. In practice, it may be found that a gate circuit will tolerate “high” signals of considerably less voltage and “low” signals of considerably greater voltage than those specified here.Ĭonversely, the extremely small output margins shown-guaranteeing output states for “high” and “low” signals to within 0.05 volts of the power supply “rails”-are optimistic. What is shown represents “worst-case” input signal performance, based on manufacturer’s specifications. ![]() The margins for acceptable “high” and “low” signals may be greater than what is shown in the previous illustrations. Shown here are the acceptable “high” and “low” states, for both input and output, of CMOS integrated circuits operating at 10 volts and 15 volts, respectively: Unlike TTL, which is restricted to a power supply voltage of 5 volts, CMOS may be powered by voltages as high as 15 volts (some CMOS circuits as high as 18 volts). Noise Margins at Higher Operating VoltagesĬMOS noise margins widen even further with higher operating voltages. In other words, CMOS circuits can tolerate over twice the amount of superimposed “noise” voltage on their input lines before signal interpretation errors will result. It should be obvious from these figures that CMOS gate circuits have far greater noise margins than TTL: 1.45 volts for CMOS low-level and high-level margins, versus a maximum of 0.7 volts for TTL. “Acceptable” output signal voltages (voltage levels guaranteed by the gate manufacturer over a specified range of load conditions) range from 0 volts to 0.05 volts for a “low” logic state, and 4.95 volts to 5 volts for a “high” logic state: For a CMOS gate operating at a power supply voltage of 5 volts, the acceptable input signal voltages range from 0 volts to 1.5 volts for a “low” logic state, and 3.5 volts to 5 volts for a “high” logic state. ![]() Simply put, the noise margin is the peak amount of spurious or “noise” voltage that may be superimposed on a weak gate output voltage signal before the receiving gate might interpret it wrongly:ĬMOS gate circuits have input and output signal specifications that are quite different from TTL. The difference between the tolerable output and input ranges is called the noise margin of the gate.įor TTL gates, the low-level noise margin is the difference between 0.8 volts and 0.5 volts (0.3 volts), while the high-level noise margin is the difference between 2.7 volts and 2 volts (0.7 volts). Such a signal would be considered uncertain, and no logic gate manufacturer would guarantee how their gate circuit would interpret such a signal.Īs you can see, the tolerable ranges for output signal levels are narrower than for input signal levels, to ensure that any TTL gate outputting a digital signal into the input of another TTL gate will transmit voltages acceptable to the receiving gate. If a voltage signal ranging between 0.8 volts and 2 volts were to be sent into the input of a TTL gate, there would be no certain response from the gate. ![]() “Acceptable” output signal voltages (voltage levels guaranteed by the gate manufacturer over a specified range of load conditions) range from 0 volts to 0.5 volts for a “low” logic state, and 2.7 volts to 5 volts for a “high” logic state: “Acceptable” input signal voltages range from 0 volts to 0.8 volts for a “low” logic state, and 2 volts to 5 volts for a “high” logic state. However, real TTL gate circuits cannot output such perfect voltage levels, and are designed to accept “high” and “low” signals deviating substantially from these ideal values. Ideally, a TTL “high” signal would be 5.00 volts exactly, and a TTL “low” signal 0.00 volts exactly. TTL gates operate on a nominal power supply voltage of 5 volts, +/- 0.25 volts. However, in reality, logic signal voltage levels rarely attain these perfect limits due to stray voltage drops in the transistor circuitry, and so we must understand the signal level limitations of gate circuits as they try to interpret signal voltages lying somewhere between full supply voltage and zero. In a perfect world, all logic circuit signals would exist at these extreme voltage limits, and never deviate from them (i.e., less than full voltage for a “high,” or more than zero voltage for a “low”). Logic gate circuits are designed to input and output only two types of signals: “high” (1) and “low” (0), as represented by a variable voltage: full power supply voltage for a “high” state and zero voltage for a “low” state. ![]() Watch the EndNote Quickstart Guide video (10. Einstein showed that these results can be explained by two assumptions: (1) that light is composed of corpuscles or photons, the energy of which is given by Planck’s relationship, and (2) that an atom in the metal can absorb either a whole photon or nothing. Furthermore, emission takes place as soon as the light shines on the surface there is no detectable delay. The kinetic energy of the emitted electrons depends on the frequency ν of the radiation, not on its intensity for a given metal, there is a threshold frequency ν 0 below which no electrons are emitted. In 1905 Einstein extended Planck’s hypothesis to explain the photoelectric effect, which is the emission of electrons by a metal surface when it is irradiated by light or more-energetic photons. ![]() Photoelectric effect: Einstein's Nobel Prize-winning discovery See all videos for this article
